We have been working with EE and Sim Local for a number of years now and our latest project with both brands saw us take a trip to several UK airports. Unfortunately for us, no planes were boarded nor sunnier climes enjoyed.

No, instead we were tasked with wrapping nine of Sim Local’s sim card vending machines located at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports. And the painful reality is, this is probably as close to a plane as we’ll be getting this year!

These vending machines are aimed at incoming travellers to the UK looking for quick access to affordable sim cards to stay in touch with their loved ones back home.

The Citizen design team developed the creative messaging and visuals for both brands and 3D visualised the final concepts so the clients could (almost) see the final product before production began. This was especially helpful to demonstrate how the branding would stand out against what are naturally, incredibly busy environments in terms of both shere volumes of people and retail ‘noise’ competing for consumers’ attention.

EE Sim Card Vending Machines

Once the messaging and branding was approved it was over to our production team who managed the whole process, including all of the relevant security passes and so on that you would anticipate working on sites such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports.

Installed over several nights the machines are now all live across terminals two, three and the central bus station at Heathrow as well as baggage claim at both Stansted and Gatwick.

Lauren Horton, Communications Manager at EE, had this to say about the project: “I am so pleased to see the newly wrapped vending machines standing out brilliantly in the airports. The Citizen team did an amazing  job, acting flexibly and proactively to complete the project amidst very challenging Coronavirus restrictions.”

Now we just need this pesky virus to do one so we can all see them in real life (and then hop on a plane to our favourite destination of course).
